Started working on The Sketchbook Project http://www.arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject
and made this sketch at Kahwa, one of my favourite Montreal cafes. As part of my writer's residency at McGill, I have a class of 15 students and have told them I'll do all the assignments I assign to them. This past week I asked them to venture outside their apartments and sketch something in Montreal, using their non dominant hand. Here's my sketch of Kahwa Cafe, a place where one of the owners makes and sells pottery displayed on shelves among the exotic coffee pots and camels and fronds. A place where there is always a handsome man peeling and chopping winter squash and potatoes to make something delicious in what I can only describe as a cauldron. Drawing with my left hand somehow lets the beauty and love of a place come through in a way that drawing with my right hand does not. The piece is then coloured using the dominant hand. My students have submitted drawings that I find breathtaking in their tenderness.
