Hardware Store

Had an afternoon to play before the Amazon First Novel Award event so went to an old Queen Street West hardware store that's been there 25 years to stock up on the items you see laid out on my snazzy red-striped bed here at the Thompson Hotel. I've been meaning to buy a funnel all my life, and today was the day: 59 cents. Also stocked up on different grades of sandpaper for finishing the wooden applewood blocks Dear One, Juliette and I are making, and also maybe for smoothing the chipped nose of the soapstone bear playing a concertina that I found at the corner of Jean-Talon and Papineau. That fantastic drumstick will go well with the hand drum I bought for this summer's Tam Tams - it's a used drumstick and they gave it to me for ten dollars at a Native arts store near the Queen Street hardware place. I bought some small nails as Dear One only ever has gargantuan galvanized ones when I'm nail-hunting at home for my various bat duties. A few other things lie on the bed, and I also finally bought myself some wild yam cream from a certified herbalist near the hardware store. She said as long as I watch out for heart palpitations I should be on my way to wild yam happiness. Oh and there's a yellow wooden spin top and a bouncy ball full of purple glitter suspended in water. And my first ever splatter-screen.

I don't know how I managed without a funnel all this time either! Things are going to be different from now on, that's for sure.
