Madam, Your Slip is Showing

It rained all day but I like to go out for at least one walk, so interrupted my recline on the couch with Colm Toibin to post some letters with the dog. My wardrobe was casual. I had on my recycled slip with purple lace edge, so shoved a bright silk skirt over it and donned coat and scarf, and traipsed over the tree-reflecting puddles toward the post office. But the purple lace descended lower and lower, until I finally had to admit the elastic was down around my knees. It was a bit hard to rectify this while holding the dog. Things got worse and worse. It was one of those days when living in a big city is better than living in a small town. People may pass you on the street, but they do not know who you are.

Like an illustration in a children's book--one half-remembered, dream-like, both droll and charming.
