Gratitude for A Room of One's Own

This week I began writing a new manuscript in a lovely office given to me by McGill University during my time there as the first Mordecai Richler writer-in-residence. The office, in the Arts Building seen in the photo, is heaven: plain and sedate, it has an incredibly high ceiling and a many-paned window opening onto the gnarled, snow-covered trees of the main campus, with the fizz of downtown Montreal beyond. The door has a key, and when I go in there to write, my soul knows it will not be disturbed: I boil the kettle and make white apricot tea in a Japanese cup, and begin to write. This is my first post as a writer-in-residence anywhere, and I truly appreciate it, because at no other time have I been able to walk into an enclosed, protected space away from my own home, and been free to go deeply, deeply, into the solitude needed for a manuscript to appear. What bliss. What utter privilege and peace.

Well deserved!
Hi, Kathleen:

Congratulations on your position and that lovely view...well deserved, though I have window envy. Ah, to have sacred space, all my own! Take care,
